Course Description:
Race is not just a social construct—it is an organizing force with profound implications in both our personal and professional lives. Whether we acknowledge it or not, race shapes how we see the world, how we show up in our work, and how we lead and interact with others. For healthcare providers and leaders, recognizing the impact of race, racial dynamics, and racial identity—our own and our clients’—is essential in making informed decisions, delivering effective interventions, and building meaningful relationships. Each of us has the power to act as a healer, fostering healing and equity through racially responsible choices.
Yet, because society has long discouraged open conversations about race, many clinicians and leaders haven’t had the opportunity to develop the tools to recognize or address how race impacts their work. This workshop is designed to build that capacity, equipping participants with a racially conscious lens that they can apply across both personal and professional relationships.
Dr. Kenneth V. Hardy teaches that the journey to becoming a racially responsible healer involves moving through the stages of seeing, being, and doing. This transformative journey moves us from racial unawareness to racial responsibility and requires intentionality, self-reflection, and active growth:
- Seeing: Developing the capacity to recognize race, racial dynamics, and the impact of pro-racist ideology and racism.
- Being: Understanding ourselves as racial beings and reflecting on how we contribute to or are affected by pro-racist ideologies.
- Doing: Engaging in racially sensitive, trauma-informed actions that promote healing, equity, and challenge systemic oppression.
In this one-day interactive and experiential workshop, facilitators Dr. Bukky Kolawole and Deidre Ashton, LCSW honor the vulnerability of engaging in conversations about race. They will support your learning through a unique process of self-reflection, group discussions, present moment processing, and practical exercises.
This workshop aims to deepen your understanding of how to enact racially responsible care and leadership within your role, empowering you to take meaningful steps toward promoting racial justice and equity in your daily practice.
Join us and take the next step in becoming a racially responsible healer and leader.
Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize where you are on your journey towards racial responsibility
2. Identify internal, external, and relational barriers to progress
3. Discover frameworks that help you move from racial awareness into action
