Course Description:
This training is to equip professionals with deep understanding and more advanced skills to advocate for the LGBTQ+ individuals and families they serve. With special attention to our professional roles, we will define heteronormativity, deconstruct binary thinking, discuss gatekeeping, and explore relevant clinical themes. In this training, participants will explore their own identities and biases in depth, and develop better practice guidelines together, with respect to the unique needs of their clients and community members.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Receive information aand tools required to provide comprehensive mental health care for LGBTQ+ clients.
  2. Gain understanding and practical application of key concepts include the gender binary, distinctions between sex, sexuality, and gender, responding to microaggressions, and clinically relevant aspects of diverse gender transition experiences.
  3. Develop confidence in your personal role advocating for safety and inclusivity for queer and transgender individuals and their families.

Sorin L. Thomas, MA, LPC, LAC, CGP, Founding and Executive Director of Queer Asterisk Therapeutic Services, is a queer and transgender Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Addictions Counselor, Certified Group Psychotherapist, and Approved Clinical Supervisor with twenty years professional experience in the field of psychology serving queer and transgender individuals and their families. Sorin has a Masters in Somatic Counseling Psychology from Naropa University and post-graduate experience in wilderness therapy, addiction recovery, adolescent and adult residential treatment, community based services, emergency psychiatric services, and hospital settings. In addition to offering queer-affirming counseling and clinical supervision, Sorin offers consultation and diversity, equity, and inclusivity trainings through a queer lens to mental health organizations, addiction recovery centers, social service agencies, hospitals, and schools.
