Course Description: This training focuses on the practice of broaching identities as a means of beginning therapy with clients.  Broaching is often seen as a practice used at the start of treatment.  This training situates broaching as one component of clinically practicing from an inclusive lens.  It’s just the beginning!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn the clinical basis for broaching identities in therapy.
  2. Examine internalized messages about your own identities as well as those of diverse communities.
  3. Practice broaching in a supportive, shame free environment.

Melody Brown PhD, LMFT, Founder of Systemic Solutions LLC, Clinical Coordinator at Experience Change, and Clinical Director at Whole Connection Counseling, is a Black and Queer Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical Supervisor, and Public Speaker.  Her path to the field of Marriage and Family Therapy has been circuitous but purposeful.  She grew up in Louisiana and learned early on to pay attention to issues of injustice and oppression.  She lives on the margins as a Black woman in the Queer community.  She learned to appreciate her intersecting identities and loves passing that appreciation on to clinicians of all backgrounds.  She believes we each bring our respective cultural contexts and identities to our relationships.  These narratives influence how we engage in relationships be it intimate, familial, platonic, or professional.
